31 Days of Pinterest Projects - Day 24 - Mudroom Paint Reveal

Part of the reason I was MIA last week was due to the fact that I was painting my little heart out over here.

I finished painting the umpteenth coat of white on the walls and trim {if any of you are going to attempt to paint wood paneling, please beware, it WILL take a gazillion hours of coating and recoating...and waiting for a sunny day so you can see that you need to recoat yet again...LOL}. I also finished the second coat on the shelving unit and grabbed a roller on probably one of the last warm summery days of the year and painted the exterior doors of the mudroom.

Check it out. . .{we still need to put the light fixtures back up, add in the bench under the shelving unit and install a cabinet and hanging rod over the washer/dryer, but after having this area of our home dysfunctional since March, it is great to have it looking this done again}.

I was so thrilled to find that colorful rag rug that tied together all the colors in my vision for $20 just last week.

And yes, we went with ORANGE exterior doors. We discussed it forever and finally Dave said we should just go bold with the orange. It's different and it takes guts. And I'd seen lots of orange and blue on Pinterest and I loved it on there.

We did have a freak-out moment when we first started rolling that orange paint on next to some neon green Frog Tape when we thought it looked like our local Mexican restaurant (La Palma) but after removing the tape and the paint drying, we love it. We think it looks fabulous with the silver-gray siding and it's one of our favorite colors! As an added bonus, it supports the local Tigers :)

Here's my view from the kitchen :) I absolutely love all the bold colors with the crisp white walls. And that oil rubbed bronze door knob just makes me SO happy.

But I think the shelving unit is my absolute favorite part. The color is a greenish-gray that I picked up in the oops section of Walmart for less than $5. I think the paint color, the beadboard that we added to the sides, and the oil rubbed bronze spray painted hooks really create just the vintage vibe that I was going for. 

I had been planning to purchase a few wire baskets for corralling our necessities on the shelves but when the time came, I was feeling thrifty and decided not to spend the money and to instead grab baskets and containers that we already owned from all over the house. I'm loving the collected look I've ended up with.

Another great touch is the King Feed yardstick I just sat up on top of the hooks and the lantern that Dave scored from his brother's storage shed when they cleaned it out last week. Just fun little details that make it so special.

Now, for kicks, let's look back at what this space looked like when we moved in. We've come a long way, haven't we?

Isn't it amazing what a little paint can do? Do you all love it?

And now that I'm on a painting roll I'm itching to move onto the living room trim!

31 Days of Pinterest Projects - Day 19 - Painting Mudroom Shelving Unit

Today during the last half of Levi's naptime today I worked on painting the first coat of color on the mudroom shelves. I found this quart of "oops" interior satin paint at Wal-Mart months ago - the color is "Duckety Mud" although I'm not sure if it was tinted wrong or not and maybe that's why it was in the "oops" section. Anyways, it was less than $5.

I decided to use this 3" foam roller on our new Purdy roller handle.

I was a little nervous that I would hate the color. 

At first I kind of did. It was a bit more green and less of a true gray than I had thought it was.

But it grew on me as I kept painting. 

I used a really small paint brush to get the edges near the wall but the roller worked on nearly the entire thing. About an hour later I was done with the first coat. I would have kept on going but needed to wait 4 hours to recoat. (Ignore the mess! Ah!) Obviously it needs another coat but doesn't it look great so far???

I picked up some Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze-ish Metallic Spray Paint (and a spray grip handle and some spray primer) at Wal-Mart today for the hardware in the room - the knobs, hinges, hooks on the shelving unit, etc. 

While I was there I also grabbed a few paint chips - trying to decide on a good color for the doors. All three of us (me, Dave & Levi even) loved a particular bright orange (Fresh Tangerine I think) but then when we held it up later to the greenish-gray shelving unit we did not like it anymore. I think we need more of a brown-orange. I still want a deep red though honestly. I'm not totally convinced on the orange. 

So what do you guys think? Red or orange? We're going to paint both sides of the three doors (two out of the mudroom to the outside and one from the mudroom into the kitchen). I think red or orange would look great with the gray siding on the exterior of the home.

31 Days of Pinterest Projects - Day 17 - Painting the Mudroom

Yes, I started painting the mudroom way back on March 3rd. (Read more about the project here.) And yes, it is October 17th and I'm just finishing it. Don't ask.

I have to say that I am so thankful to Jenny & Margaret (my sister-in-laws) for helping me slowly make my way through this project. Would still be browsing Pinterest and eating cookie dough if it weren't them.

Here's a quick shot I took with my Ipod camera. Not so great quality but you get the idea - we went with a blue ceiling and white walls and trim. I'm going to paint the shelving unit gray (a little oops quart I got from Walmart earlier this year). And then I'm planning to paint the exterior doors a bold color. Dave wants orange. Which would work well with the mood board I created from Pinterest photo inspiration for this space back in April. We'll see where we end up.

I'm just so proud of myself that I stopped the procrastination cycle and went to the hardware store yesterday, picked the blue paint color in under 30 seconds and never looked back. Finally making progress again :) It feels so good!
