Dresser Drawers - Fun Organizing Ideas

About every night before bed, I find myself browsing Pinterest. And one evening I found this cool idea . . .

Why on earth would you stack t-shirts in your dresser drawer when you can FILE them!?!?!?

So today when I put away the laundry, I took this opportunity to file Dave's t-shirts. All it required was a little refolding so they'd fit in the drawer neatly like this (sorry the pic is sideways, for the life of me I can't figure out why!!)

Then I headed over to my drawer and found my t-shirts in complete disarray in a sloppy stack.

So I just had to file mine as well. And throw away a few old ratty t-shirts. I'm constantly purging.

Gone are the days of wearing the same 2 shirts over and over cuz the others are buried in the bottom of the drawer. Dave already found a couple shirts he forgot he even had!!!

Gone are the days of knocking the whole stack over while trying to find that favorite shirt somewhere on the bottom.

I know this is day one, but I think I'm in love with filing clothes. I also did my underwear drawer and Dave's long underwear drawer. Just couldn't get enough. . .

And while we're on the subject of dresser drawers, anyone else have a sock organizer like this?

I've been using mine for the past 3 years or so since I found it at the Container Store. I don't think I'll ever go back.

What other ideas do you all have for dresser drawer organization?

Day 18 - Kids' Clothes

Welcome back to Day 18 of the 31 Days to a Clutter Free Home series. We're moving onto Kids' Clothes today.

I can not believe how fast our little man, Levi, has grown! He no more than gets into one size till he's ready for the next. In the past year I've learned that if you have too many clothes in one size then he never even wears some of the outfits that get pushed to the back of the drawer.

We were blessed tremendously by friends and family with lots and lots of clothes - new and used, when he was born. One day I took all the clothes and sorted them by size on our dining table. Then I purchased small (about 18" x 15" x 12") clear rubbermaid containers and put the clothes in there by size and labelled the containers. We put the sizes that he would need right away on the top shelf of his closet and put the rest in the attic. Now when he outgrows a set of clothes, I take the next size out of their box (make sure we have enough and buy whatever we might be short on), launder them and put them in the dresser and put the too-small clothes in that box and change out the size label. It has been a very handy system.

I saw that Andrea did something similar here in her small Brooklyn apartment and was featured on IHeart Organizing.

In fact, the containers she used are identical to the ones I used. She just has a lot cuter labels than I!

As far as how many items I have in each size...In my opinion, I feel we only need to have at any one time, about 5-6 outfits, 5-6 sleepers, 4 blankets, 2 crib sheets, a handful of socks and maybe 2 pairs of shoes, and a coat. I tend to do laundry every 3-4 days so even if Levi has an accident or something and needs an extra outfit a couple days, we're still fine. We are working with small dresser drawers and a smallish house and don't really have space for more than that anyways. So that's what works for our family. By setting these limits, I am able to edit our belongings very easily. Emotional attachment to the items doesn't really have to be factored in. If I see that we have 12 pairs of pants and only need 5-6, I simply weed out the clothing items that we don't like as well or are stained or slightly worn and donate those (might as well share the love!)or throw them away, if they're that bad. Or if I really like the items, I may box up a few extras for a future child knowing that some of the clothes Levi is wearing now we surely wear out.

We also keep extra diapers, cloth diapers, wipes, socks, shoes and extra bedding in Levi's closet in plastic drawer containers since those items don't fit in the dresser in his room.

Only you can decide what works for your family. But I recommend you take a good look at how many outfits your kids have and how often you do laundry, and come up with an intentional plan.

There's no need to have 12 outfits if you do laundry every 3 days. Probably the 3 favorite outfits will get worn over and over and over and the other 9 outfits will be smashed in the back of the drawer, never to be seen again till the end of the season when you swap out for summer clothes.

Too often when we are busy with work, school, church, life in general...we just go on auto-pilot at home and neglect really putting any thought into these types of things. Then we wonder why we can't even fit the clothes back in the dresser when we get around to putting the clean laundry away or we wonder where are the matching socks are...hehe...

Be sure to check back tomorrow...we'll be talking about reducing TOY clutter!

Day 11 - Master Bedroom Closet

Can't believe it's the 11th already! In case you are new, we're making our way through the series, 31 Days to a Clutter Free Home.

Today we're addressing the Master Bedroom Closet. We've already talked about purging clothing back on Day 6 so I'm sure you've got that taken care of *wink wink,* so now we're going to chat about a few other things you can do to make your closets seem less cluttered.

  • Use matching hangers, and space them evenly. Some people like to use those slim, no-slip velvet hangers to fit more in the closet without it looking too crammed. I personally don't like them that much. I'd rather have wooden hangers (and fewer clothes!). I first got this idea from The Nester last year. So this past winter I found white wooden hangers at Home Goods and I just HAD to buy them. I love wooden hangers. But I love white wooden hangers more.

  • Install a couple hooks. Then you can hang things like a bath towel or a hoodie or pair of jeans that you intend to wear again tomorrow without having to use a hanger or something and then you don't even up wadding those items up on the floor at the end of the day.
  • Use decorative, matching baskets for things like scarves, hats, shoes. People often think that it would be way too expensive to buy something like that. But I found these 2 baskets for $7 / piece at Home Goods. There are deals out there. Check the dollar section at Target or go to the Dollar Store. Seeing my two matching brown baskets gives me such joy.

  • Use a jewelry organizer. My sister-in-law gave this to me and I honestly didn't even think I had enough jewelry to fill it. But I did. And I find that I'm much more apt to wear it since I can just pull this out of the closet and choose my jewelry while I'm choosing my outfits rather than dig through a jewelry box.
  • Install a double level hanging system - you end up fitting twice as many clothes in your closet! (This photo was actually taken in the closet in Levi's room when we were sleeping in there during the remodel of our bedroom.)
  • Get a shoe organizer.
  • Keep the floor cleared off.

And if any of you are struggling with purging, you might check out my friend, Marla's blog. She's writing all about Purging this month. And she's sure to inspire you! I especially enjoyed her Day 4 post.

Day 6 - Laundry Reduction

I have noticed that one of the easiest (and most obvious) ways to reduce clutter throughout the home is to reduce the amount of clothes and towels and bedding that you actually own. If your clothes closets and dresser drawers and laundry hampers and linen closets and towel cabinets are all overflowing then you can't even begin to stash anything else away in those locations. And you can find yourself completely overwhelmed on laundry day!

Step 1 - My first piece of advice is to go through all your clothes and purge a ton of them. Follow all the normal advice about getting rid of items that you haven't worn in at least a year, only keeping pieces that make you feel good about yourself, keeping clothing that pertains to your current lifestyle (i.e. get rid of working woman clothes if you're now a stay at home mom), etc. Be ruthless.

I once read in a book that the average person only needs about 9 outfits. I also read online from another source that a stay at home woman needs 5-7 outfits for everyday (no sweats), maybe 4 nice outfits for church or whatever, 2 pairs of tennis shoes (1 for working outside or painting), 1-2 pairs loafer type shoes, and I think they said 4 dress shoes, and a winter coat....how close are your collections of clothing to this average suggestion? I think that I've pared my belongings down to something similar to this and it is very refreshing. It is much easier to decide what to wear when you have fewer choices!

Make an effort to donate / sell / throw away enough clothing so that you can clear out at least 1 drawer in your dresser (hopefully more!). This is important because when you've accomplished this, you suddenly have a newfound spot for all those things that end up on top of the dresser on a daily basis (like your keys, your husband's wallet, spare change, etc.) Now you walk into your bedroom and see a cleared off flat surface and you can think to yourself, "Wow...our house isn't that messy after all!"

In an effort to stage our home to sell, we actually decided that we should take 1 of our 2 dressers (which were at the time completely crammed full) out of our bedroom and really minimize the amount of clothing in our closet to make our master suite appear roomier than it is and therefore more appealing. So we both went thru our clothes and got rid of a lot. In the end we ended up only needing the 1 dresser. And 4 of the drawers in it are taken up not with clothes but with Dave's random stuff (to do lists, flash lights, watches, etc.)

Another thing we did in our bedroom that makes me very happy is that we relocated Dave's coin jars. He always wanted to have 4 jars (one for pennies, one for nickels, one for dimes, one for quarters) sitting on top of our dresser. He puts his change in there each night. I hated how that looked sitting out cluttering up our space. And it definitely wasn't an attractive decoration. But I also loved how it was all sorted when it came time to roll it up. So I talked him into stashing the jars inside his drawer with some of his clothing and it works quite nicely.

Step 2 - I once read a tip online (source unknown) that said you should have only 2 bath towels per person (1 to be in use while the other is in the laundry) in the household and 1 towel per guest. Basically, if you have a 4 member household and generally 2 people come visit you at any one time, you should have 10 bath towels in your household. If you would ever have a bunch of extra house guests you could just ask them to bring their own towel or something.

I did not follow that advice completely but I have reduced our collection down to 8 towels. They fit comfortably on two shelves in our master closet and it is nice not having to find a spot for a bunch more. I also purchased a basket from HomeGoods that I use for hand towels and wash cloths and baby bath towels. If my basket gets too full, I know it's time to get rid of something. (The bottom shelf is empty b/c those towels are in the laundry currently...)

Another thing is that I think you really only need 2 sets of sheets per bed. One to be used while the other is in the laundry. Perhaps you might want a third for a baby/small child in case they were sick. I keep our spare sheets in our storage ottoman in the bedroom and Levi's are in his closet.

Step 3 - Get into a laundry groove. Set a couple days a week for doing laundry and DO IT NO MATTER WHAT. I do laundry on Wednesdays and Saturdays now. If I have some big event and can't do it one of those days then I just do it the very next day. In all actuality, if you've done a good job of purging the towels and clothes you don't need, you probably won't be able to go more than 3-4 days without doing laundry anyways. At least that's where we are right now.

I think some peoples' problems with piles of laundry is that they simply have so many clothes they rarely even have to do laundry and then when everything is finally dirty and they are forced to wash the clothes out of necessity, they have a mountain of dirty stinky clothes with set in stains to deal with.

I don't have a problem with putting loads of laundry in the washer or dryer but actually folding and putting them away is what I hate doing. I will stall out at that step. Then the machines sit there full of clothes and the day just flies by and my laundry is not done. So I had to come up with a system to trick myself into doing it.

Nowadays, what I do is I throw in a load of darks then a load of lights and dry them immediately. As the loads get dry, I just throw them in a laundry basket in a big wad and carry it to our bedroom, dumping the clothes out on the bed. At the end of the day I have a giant pile of unfolded clean clothes on my bed. Then before I can go to sleep I have to force myself to fold it all and put it away. There's only been about once in the past year that I've just taken the pile and shoved it onto the floor to deal with the next day...because I think I'd hate to see that big pile of clothes mess up my bedroom floor more than I hate folding the clothes.

My perfectionist self tells me this is not a good system since the clothes tend to get wrinkled throughout the day before I fold them. It would be best to fold them right as they come out of the dryer to reduce wrinkles. But I know myself well enough to know that I fail at that. So I'd rather have clean wrinkled clothes at the end of the day than dirty ones still waiting on me to tend to them.

So, evaluate what makes you procrastinate when it comes to laundry and set up some sort of system to motivate yourself.

Once you've reduced your amounts of clothing, towels and bedding, laundry should be a much simpler task around your home. And you should be able to reclaim some closet/cabinet/dresser space for other items.
